The suburb & beach was named after James C. Moffat, a chemist from Brisbane, who established a holiday house on Moffat Head in 1883. Moffat Beach is not a patrolled beach, but a quick dip is possible.Moffat is home to many great waves and surfers. Moffat Beach is surround by residential housing, Cafes, the post office, newsagent, parkland and apartments. One can walk to Dicky Beach along the beach North West of Moffats.

As with most of the Caloundra area, the seachange phenomenon has also had a big impact on the area with 'cashed-up' buyers moving from their traditional city homes for a semi or permanent retirement by the sea. While Moffat Beach itself is quite a small suburb, schools, shopping centres, churches, parklands and sporting facilities can all be found in neighbouring Caloundra.
