Settlement of Golden Beach dates from the late 19th century, with land used mainly for farming and grazing. Development of the suburb started from the 1950s, with rapid growth from the 1960s into the 1980s.
Golden Beach is a coastal suburb with the Pumicestone Passage forming its eastern boundary. It is mostly fully developed with low density residential housing. A canal from the passage passes through the suburb from east to west leading into the canal developments of the neighbouring suburb of Pelican Waters. The long sandspit at the northern tip of Bribie Island protects Golden Beach from the Coral Sea. However, this section of the Pumicestone Passage is very narrow and very shallow (less than 2 metres (6 ft 7 in)) with shifting sand and mud banks, which makes the northern sandspit highly dynamic in shape through natural processes of sand/mud buildup and erosion. During storms, waves may cross over the sandspit from the Coral Sea into the Pumicestone Passage, with the potential to break though the sandspit to create new entrances to Pumicestone Passage. The creation of new entrances would impact on Golden Beach and Pelican Waters, which would then be exposed more directly to the stronger wave action of the Coral Sea as opposed to the calmer waters of the Pumicestone Passage.
South of Caloundra City and north of Pelican Waters, Golden Beach overlooks the Pumicestone Channel and, on a clear day, Bribie Island.
The development of Pelican Waters has awakened interest in Golden Beach, a sleeping giant until reasonably recently. Previously regarded as 'God's waiting room', Golden Beach is now attracting a greater mix of families and semi-retired professionals looking for their place by the sea. Located to the south of Caloundra and north of Pelican Waters, Golden Beach overlooks the Pumicestone Channel and, on a clear day, Bribie Island. Predominantly a residential suburb, Golden Beach offers buyers the choice of older style beach cottages and newly developed apartment complexes.
Looking for proximity to the coast, many buyers have found the cost of buying, demolishing and rebuilding in the older parts of Golden Beach comparable to newer housing developments located further from the coastline. This has seen the revitalisation of older parts of Golden Beach into a more modern beachside community. As with single unit dwellings, apartments are also attracting the owner-occupier market. Where apartment complexes in the area had previously targeted investors and holiday-makers, the Renaissance and Cabarita developments aimed for owner occupation. Residents enjoy good access to the beach, rugby league and AFL clubs, a primary school, sailing club, parks, and picnic areas within the suburb boundaries. Medical and retail facilities are close by in Caloundra. Residents are also close to the supermarket in Pelican Waters.
